Col. (Dr.)  S.P.Wahi, -  Chairman (Padmabhushan Award & Life Time Achievement Award )

Col Wahi is the Chairman and founder of SPW and has been instrumental in providing strategic direction to the Company’s operations since its inception. Col. Wahi is a recognized name and an authority on management issues in corporate India and has over 55 years of operational experience with the Indian Government and the private sector. He has extensive experience with the setting up of industries, management and turn around of unprofitable enterprises and management education. He was instrumental in leading negotiations on behalf of the Government of India for several joint ventures and financing transactions with global financial institutions including the World Bank.

In November 2005, Col Wahi was appointed Chairman of NITIE, National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai. During his illustrious career, Col Wahi has held several prestigious positions including the Chairman of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC - 1981-1989), Chairman & Managing Director of the Cement Corporation of India (CCI), Chairman Bharat Ophthalmic Glass Ltd. and the Chairman of the Standing Committee of Public Enterprises (SCOPE). In addition to these, he held senior executive positions in Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL), Bokaro Steel Plant, Heavy Vehicles Factory and served on the executive Board of several other Public and Private Sector organizations to include HEC and Mishra Dhatu Nigham, Malabar Cement Limited and UP Cement. He was a member of the Public Enterprises Selection Board and on the Board of the Governing Body of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, on governing Boards of Administrative Staff College Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and continues to be on the Board of Foundation for Organisational Research and Education.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the oil sector in India, Col Wahi was awarded the Padma Bhushan, a National award in 1987 by the President of India.

Chairman Col S P Wahi was given Life Time Achievement Award for his contribution in the Upstream Oil Sector by Petrotech Society, India, in January 2007.

 

Col Wahi earned his engineering degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from the reputed Banaras Hindu University. In recognition of his distinguished contributions to Science and Technology he was conferred honorary doctorates by several leading institutes to include the Indian School of Mines (Doctorate of Science - 1985), Roorkee University (Doctorate of Engineering – 1987) and the Banaras Hindu University (Doctorate of Science – 1989). Additionally, Col Wahi has Fellowships to the British Institute of Management, Institute of Engineers, All India Management Association, Indian national Academy of Engineering and Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

 
   
Col Wahi also served as the President of the Indian Golf Union, President of the Public Sector Sports Control Board and Chairman of the Sports Improvement Development Commission of the Indian Olympic Association.
